Mules climbing out of the Grand Canyon via the Kaibab Trail

We could hear the sounds of the mule’s hooves pace evenly over the rocks as we descended into the canyon towards the Colorado River via the Kaibab trail. It was not the kind of studio contrived hollow sound of hooves that you might expect to hear in an old western. I would try to describe the sound but I don't know how to start. Anyway, we could hear the hooves for some distance and I kept looking up to watch them ascend as the sound slowly faded away. Other than the sound of the mules, the canyon was very quiet and peaceful.
